Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and veterans face significant physical and mental health risks from their service — musculoskeletal injuries, hearing loss, PTSD, traumatic brain injury and chronic pain conditions are common. When these prevent a return to work, there are potentially multiple entitlements to explore.
Military super schemes
ADF members have super through dedicated military schemes managed by CSC (Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation):
- Military Super (MSBS) — for members who joined before 2016
- ADF Super — for members who joined from July 2016
Both schemes include TPD-equivalent disability provisions, though the structure differs from civilian TPD insurance.
DVA compensation alongside TPD
A veteran may be entitled to both DVA compensation (including the DRCA or MRCA incapacity payments) and a military super disability benefit. These are different systems and may run concurrently. However, offsets can apply — it's important to understand how they interact.
PTSD and mental health claims
PTSD is one of the most common grounds for military super disability claims. Strong psychiatric evidence from a treating specialist — ideally one familiar with trauma — is essential. Check your eligibility with a free assessment.
