Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and other severe respiratory conditions cause progressive breathlessness, chronic fatigue and frequent infections that worsen over time. For many Australians — particularly those who worked in trades, mining or agriculture — these conditions force an early end to their working lives.
Can lung disease qualify for TPD?
Yes, when it is severe enough. Advanced COPD (Stage III or IV on the GOLD scale) is commonly associated with disability severe enough to meet TPD definitions. Pulmonary fibrosis, which is progressive and irreversible, can also qualify. A respiratory physician's assessment of your lung function and prognosis is central to the claim.
Relevant evidence
- Spirometry and lung function tests showing severity
- Respiratory physician reports
- Records of hospitalisations or oxygen dependence
- GP statements on your exercise tolerance and ability to work
Occupational history can matter
If your lung disease was caused or worsened by your occupation — asbestos exposure, coal dust, chemical fumes — you may also have an occupational disease claim separate from your TPD claim. Both can be pursued. Start with a free eligibility check.
