Making a TPD Claim Through Colonial First State Super

8 April 2026 · 5 min read

Colonial First State is a major retail super platform. If you hold a CFS FirstChoice or related account and can no longer work, your TPD cover may be worth investigating.

Colonial First State (CFS) is one of Australia's largest wealth management platforms, offering super products including FirstChoice, FirstWrap and other managed investment and super accounts. CFS was previously owned by Commonwealth Bank and is now a standalone business. Many Australians hold CFS super accounts, often with associated life and TPD insurance.

CFS TPD insurance

Insurance within CFS super products is typically provided by AIA Australia or other underwriters depending on the product and vintage. Members may have default death and TPD cover, or additional voluntary cover added through a financial adviser. Review your CFS account documentation to confirm your insurance details.

Checking your cover

Log into your CFS online account or review your annual statement to find:

  • Whether TPD cover is attached to your account
  • The cover amount and definition (own or any occupation)
  • Whether cover is current or has lapsed

Older CFS accounts

Some older CFS products were sold when "own occupation" definitions were more common. If you have a policy established before around 2014, it may have a more favourable definition. Check carefully. Start with our free eligibility check.

Frequently asked questions

Who underwrites TPD insurance in CFS super?

It depends on your product. AIA Australia is a common underwriter for CFS products, but others apply to older accounts. Check your product disclosure statement.

Can I claim TPD through an older CFS account I forgot about?

Possibly. Locate all your super accounts via myGov ATO. If your CFS account had active TPD cover when you became unable to work, a claim may be viable.
